Turkish bath (hamam)

The historic peninsula has some of the city's best-known hamams: Cağaloğlu, built in 1741, is about 7 minutes on foot; Hürrem Sultan, between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and Çemberlitaş, by the Grand Bazaar, are about 10. Book a time slot — towels and the peştemal wrap are provided.

Bosphorus cruise

Boats leave from Eminönü, a five-minute walk from the hotel. The public Şehir Hatları ferry runs a short and a long Bosphorus tour all year; private boats and sunset cruises leave from the same waterfront. It is the easiest way to see both continents, the palaces and the bridges from the water.

Whirling dervish ceremony

The Hodjapasha Culture Centre, a restored Ottoman bath house, is about two minutes from our door. The Mevlevi sema ceremony there begins with live classical Turkish music; treat it as a ritual rather than a show — no applause, no flash.
