Sirkeci, Istanbul: what the neighbourhood is and what is in it

The old city's station quarter — Orient Express, Marmaray, wholesalers and tea houses — and what sits within a ten-minute walk of it, from someone who works here every day.

Where Sirkeci is, and why it matters

Sirkeci is the north-eastern corner of Istanbul's historic peninsula, between Sultanahmet and the Golden Horn, in the district of Fatih. It is a working quarter — wholesalers, stationers, tea houses, hotels — rather than a monument quarter, and it exists because of its station: Sirkeci was the Istanbul terminus of the Orient Express, and today it is a stop on the Marmaray line that runs under the Bosphorus. That single fact shapes everything else: this is where the old city connects to the rest of Istanbul.

The station: Orient Express, Marmaray, and the platform café

The 1890 station building still stands at the water end of the neighbourhood, with its brick arches and the old clock. The modern Marmaray platforms sit beneath it. You can walk in, look at the hall, have tea at the platform café and leave — no ticket needed. From these platforms, trains reach Üsküdar on the Asian side in about four minutes and connect to the lines for both airports.

What is within a ten-minute walk

Almost everything a first-time visitor comes for. From Hotel Marius on Orhaniye Avenue: Gülhane Park 5 minutes, the New Mosque 5, the Spice Bazaar 6, Rüstem Pasha Mosque 6, the Galata Bridge 6, Hagia Sophia 8, the Basilica Cistern 8, the Archaeological Museums 8, Topkapı Palace 9, the Blue Mosque 10, the Grand Bazaar 10, Süleymaniye 10. The ground is flat along the tram line, which is rarer in Istanbul than it sounds.

Eating in Sirkeci, honestly

This is a lunch neighbourhood: esnaf lokantası kitchens that cook for the shopkeepers, kebab houses on Hocapaşa Street, börek and pudding shops, and the fish sandwich boats at Eminönü six minutes away. It is good, cheap and closes early. For a long dinner with a view or a drink afterwards, people cross the Galata Bridge to Karaköy — fifteen minutes on foot — or take the tram two stops.

Evenings: quiet, and why that is a feature

After about nine the trade streets empty and Sirkeci becomes one of the quieter corners of the old city, with the station, the tram and the main avenue still lit and busy. If you want a bar street, this is the wrong neighbourhood and Beyoğlu is the right one. If you want to sleep eight minutes from Hagia Sophia and be at its door when it opens, the quiet is exactly what you are buying.

Hodjapasha, hamams and the small things nearby

The Hodjapasha Culture Centre — a restored Ottoman bath house two minutes from our door — stages the Mevlevi sema ceremony and Turkish dance evenings. Three historic hamams are 7 to 10 minutes away: Cağaloğlu from 1741, Hürrem Sultan between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and Çemberlitaş by the Grand Bazaar. Gülhane Park, the old palace garden, is five minutes and free.

Getting anywhere from Sirkeci

Marmaray from Sirkeci station: Üsküdar in about four minutes, Ayrılık Çeşmesi in six for the M4 to Sabiha Gökçen, Halkalı for the M11 to Istanbul Airport. The T1 tram passes the monuments in one direction and reaches Kabataş — for the Taksim funicular and the Beşiktaş ferries — in the other. The Eminönü piers, five minutes on foot, send ferries to Kadıköy, Üsküdar and up the Bosphorus.

Staying in Sirkeci

Hotel Marius is on Orhaniye Avenue, a main street beside the station rather than a back alley, about 50 m from the Marmaray entrance. Rooms are cleaned daily, breakfast is included, the front desk is staffed 24 hours and booking direct carries no agency fee. It suits people who want the monuments on foot and the trains at the corner; it does not suit anyone whose trip is built around nightlife.
