The walk from the hotel
Walk down past Sirkeci station to Eminönü and continue past the Spice Bazaar into the market streets of Tahtakale. The mosque sits above the shops of Hasırcılar Çarşısı; look for the narrow staircase that leads up from the street to its terrace.

Before you go
The architect Sinan built it for the grand vizier Rüstem Pasha around 1561–63, and it is famous for its İznik tiles — some 2,300 of them in about 80 patterns, inside and on the porch. Because the prayer hall is raised on a terrace above vaulted shops, the entrance is easy to miss. It is a working mosque: visit outside prayer times, take off your shoes, cover shoulders and knees, and women cover their hair.
