The walk from the hotel

Walk down past Sirkeci station to Eminönü square. The mosque rises above the square at the southern end of the Galata Bridge, with the Spice Bazaar — built as part of its complex — right beside it.

Before you go

Begun in 1597 for Safiye Sultan and finished in 1665 under Turhan Sultan, it took more than half a century to build; its 66 domes and semi-domes step up like a pyramid to the main dome. Inside are İznik tiles and a gilded screen behind which the imperial court attended prayers. It is a working mosque: visit outside prayer times, take off your shoes, cover shoulders and knees; women cover their hair. The courtyard steps are a favourite spot for watching the ferries and the pigeons of Eminönü.
