The walk from the hotel
Walk about 50 m to the Sirkeci tram stop and follow the T1 tram line uphill along Alemdar Caddesi, past the gate of Gülhane Park. At the top the great dome is on your left; the visitor entrance is on the side facing Topkapı Palace. If you would rather ride, the tram reaches Sultanahmet in two stops.

Before you go
Hagia Sophia is a working mosque. Visitors from abroad buy a ticket and see it from the upper gallery, where the Byzantine mosaics are; the visitor route closes during each of the five daily prayers and for longer at Friday midday, so check the day's schedule before you set off. Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered, and a headscarf for women. Early morning is the calmest time.
