Before you go
This was the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the chariot-racing arena and public heart of the Byzantine capital. Three monuments still stand along its central line: the Egyptian obelisk of Thutmose III, brought here by Theodosius in 390; the bronze Serpent Column from ancient Greece; and the Walled Obelisk. The German Fountain dates from 1900, and the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts faces the square.
