Hotel near the Galata Tower: 15 minutes on foot

Walking time
about 15 minutes

The walk from the hotel

Walk down past Sirkeci station to Eminönü, cross the Galata Bridge to Karaköy, then climb the steep, stepped streets of Galata to the tower — about 15 minutes at a brisk pace, with most of the climb at the end. To save the hill, take the T1 tram two stops to Karaköy and the historic Tünel funicular up to Tünel Square, then walk a few minutes downhill to the tower.

Before you go

The Genoese built the tower in 1348 as the Christea Turris, the Tower of Christ; today it is a museum with an observation deck about 52 m up and a view over the Golden Horn, the old city and the Bosphorus. Visitor numbers are limited, so queues can be long — go early, or simply enjoy it from the lanes around it, which are full of cafés. Hotel Marius is on the old-city side of the Golden Horn, so the walk back over the Galata Bridge at sunset, with the mosques on the skyline ahead, is part of the visit.
