The walk from the hotel
Follow the T1 tram line uphill to the Gülhane stop, then turn left into Soğukçeşme Sokağı, the cobbled lane of restored wooden houses that runs along the palace wall. It brings you out at the Imperial Gate, right behind Hagia Sophia; the ticket office is beyond the first courtyard.

Before you go
The palace is closed on Tuesdays and on some religious holidays. Arrive when it opens: the queues build up by late morning, and you will want at least half a day for the courtyards, the treasury and the terraces over the Bosphorus. Gülhane Park, just below the walls, is free and a good place to rest afterwards.
