Follow the T1 tram line uphill along Alemdar Caddesi towards Sultanahmet. Just before the square, the entrance is on your right on Yerebatan Caddesi, across the road from Hagia Sophia. Of the big Sultanahmet sights, it is the closest to our door.

Before you go

The cistern is a sixth-century underground reservoir, reached by a flight of steps; inside it is dim, cool and damp even in August. The two columns resting on Medusa heads are at the far end. Queues are shortest first thing in the morning; combine it with Hagia Sophia, across the road.
