Istanbul in spring and autumn: April, May and October

Spring and autumn are the old city's gentlest seasons: mild days, cool evenings and long walks without the summer heat. This guide covers the weather, what is on and how to plan your days — from our door in Sirkeci.

The weather

In April, daytime temperatures climb from the mid-teens to around 18 °C, with cool evenings of about 8–11 °C; May is warmer, with days around 20–23 °C. October brings days of about 18–20 °C and more rain as the month goes on. Showers are possible in every season, so pack layers and a light rain jacket.

Spring: tulips and Judas trees

Every April the city plants millions of tulips, and Gülhane Park, about 5 minutes from our door, is one of the best places to see them; Emirgan Park on the Bosphorus is the other classic. In late April and May the pink Judas trees bloom along the Bosphorus shores — take a ferry from Eminönü to see them from the water. İKSV's Istanbul Film Festival also runs in April.

Autumn: art, jazz and the marathon

Autumn is the season for culture: the Contemporary Istanbul art fair in September, the Akbank Jazz Festival from late September into October and, every two years, the Istanbul Biennial — the 2027 edition opens on 18 September. The Istanbul Marathon, which runs from Asia to Europe, is held in early November.

Planning your days

These are popular months too, so the big sights fill up by late morning, especially at weekends — start early at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı. The mild weather makes this the best time for walking: the old city's hills, the Galata Bridge and the Süleymaniye's terrace are all within reach on foot. In 2027, Eid al-Adha falls on 16–19 May; the Grand Bazaar closes for the holiday and the city is busy with Turkish travellers.

Where to stay

Sirkeci puts the old city on foot and the rest of Istanbul one ride away: the tram and Marmaray are 50 m from Hotel Marius, Gülhane Park is about 5 minutes' walk, and Bosphorus boats leave from Eminönü, 5 minutes away. The front desk is open around the clock and breakfast is included.
