Istanbul in winter: what to expect from November to March
Winter in Istanbul is cool, wet and far quieter at the big sights. This guide covers the weather, what to pack, what to do on a rainy day and how to get around — from our door in Sirkeci.
The weather
From December to February, daytime highs are usually around 9–11 °C and nights around 3–6 °C. Rain is common — December has the most rainy days — and most winters bring a few days of snow, usually in January or February. Days are short: it is dark by about five in the afternoon in December and January, so start early.
What to pack
A waterproof jacket, warm layers and shoes with a good grip. The old city's streets are steep and cobbled, and marble steps get slippery in the rain. An umbrella is worth carrying every day; the wind off the Bosphorus can be sharp on the ferries.
Why winter is a good time to come
The queues at Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Basilica Cistern are far shorter than in summer, and the city feels like its own again. It is also the season for sahlep, a hot milk drink with cinnamon, and boza — try it at Vefa Bozacısı near the Süleymaniye, in business since 1876. A Turkish bath is never better than on a cold day: Cağaloğlu Hamamı is about 7 minutes from our door.
On a rainy day
Stay under cover: the Grand Bazaar (closed on Sundays), the Spice Bazaar, the Basilica Cistern and the Archaeological Museums are all within a short walk. The Bosphorus ferries have enclosed saloons where tea is served, so a crossing to Üsküdar or Kadıköy is pleasant even in the rain. The T1 tram and Marmaray keep running when taxis are hard to find.
Dates worth knowing
25 December is a normal working day in Türkiye, so shops and sights are open; 1 January is a public holiday. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to begin on 8 February. Whatever the weather, Sirkeci keeps you close to everything: the tram and Marmaray are 50 m from the hotel, the front desk is open around the clock, and breakfast is served every morning.
