Where to stay in Istanbul's Old Town (the historic peninsula)

What the Old Town really covers, how Sultanahmet, Sirkeci and the inland streets differ, what you gain and what you give up by sleeping inside it — and how to check that a hotel calling itself "old town" really is.

What the Old Town actually is

Istanbul's Old Town is the Historic Peninsula — the triangle of land between the Golden Horn, the Sea of Marmara and the Theodosian walls, administratively the district of Fatih. Inside it sit Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar and Süleymaniye. When a hotel says "old city" it should mean this peninsula; some list themselves as old town while sitting in Beyoğlu, across the water. Check the map before you book: the Galata Bridge is the border.

The three sub-areas, and how they differ

Sultanahmet is the monument quarter: closest to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, most touristic, quiet at night, restaurants aimed at visitors. Sirkeci and Eminönü, between Sultanahmet and the Golden Horn, is the transport quarter: Sirkeci station on the Marmaray line, the T1 tram, the ferry piers, ordinary shops and bakeries, and a walk of 6–10 minutes to every monument. Inland — Beyazıt, Laleli, Aksaray — is cheaper, louder and built for trade rather than sightseeing.

Why the Old Town wins for a first visit

Because the sights are packed into about one square kilometre. From a room in Sirkeci or Sultanahmet you can be inside Hagia Sophia at opening time, back for an hour's rest at noon, and out again for sunset over the Golden Horn — without a taxi, a metro change or a ferry. Visitors who stay in Taksim or on the Asian side spend roughly half an hour each way, several times a day. Over three days that is a full sightseeing day lost to transport.

What you give up

Nightlife is thin. The Old Town has no bar street; the peninsula's evenings are for dinner, a walk past floodlit monuments and an early start. Restaurants around the monuments serve one-time customers, so the cooking is safe rather than exciting. And the streets are old: cobbles, tram lines and shallow hills. None of this matters much on a three-night monument trip, and all of it matters on a two-week stay.

Sirkeci: the practical corner of the Old Town

This is where we are, and it is the part of the peninsula we would choose. Hagia Sophia is 8 minutes on foot from Hotel Marius, Topkapı 9, the Basilica Cistern 8, the Spice Bazaar 6, the Grand Bazaar and the Blue Mosque 10, Gülhane Park 5, the Galata Bridge 6 — and the walk is flat, along the tram line. Sirkeci station is 50 m from the door: Marmaray reaches both airport lines and crosses to the Asian side in four minutes, the T1 tram passes the monuments, and the Eminönü ferries leave five minutes away. Karaköy's restaurants are a 15-minute walk over the bridge when you want an evening out.

How to check a hotel really is in the Old Town

Three quick tests before you book anywhere. One: find the address on a map and confirm it is south of the Golden Horn, in Fatih. Two: look for a named street rather than a neighbourhood — "near Sultanahmet" can mean twenty minutes uphill. Three: check the walking time to the monument you care most about, on foot, in the map app rather than in the hotel's description. Getting to the Old Town from the airports

From Istanbul Airport (IST): Marmaray to Halkalı and the M11 metro, about 80 minutes, one change, no traffic. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and the M4, about 70 minutes. Both routes end at Sirkeci station, which is why a room beside that station removes the taxi from the equation entirely. Airport buses exist and are simple, but they sit in the same traffic as everyone else.

A three-night plan that never leaves the peninsula

Day one: Hagia Sophia at opening, the Basilica Cistern, the Blue Mosque, lunch on a back street, Topkapı in the afternoon. Day two: the Spice Bazaar early, the Grand Bazaar, Süleymaniye for the view and the courtyard, then a Bosphorus boat from Eminönü. Day three: the Archaeological Museums, Gülhane Park, a hamam in the afternoon, and dinner across the Galata Bridge. Every step of it is walkable from a room in Sirkeci.
