The best hotels in Istanbul: how to actually choose one

No paid rankings. The criteria that decide whether a stay works — walking minutes, what the rate includes, the front desk at 2 a.m., how to read reviews — and an honest note on where our own hotel fits and where it does not.

There is no single best hotel in Istanbul — there is a best fit

Istanbul has thousands of hotels and the rankings that promise "the best" are usually paid placements. A more useful question is which hotel fits the trip you are taking. The criteria below are the ones our guests tell us actually mattered once they arrived: location measured in walking minutes, what the rate includes, who is at the desk at 2 a.m., and whether the reviews come from people who travelled the way you are travelling.

Location: measure it in minutes, not adjectives

"Central", "near the old city" and "close to everything" mean nothing in a city of 16 million. Ask for walking minutes to the two or three places you will actually visit, and check them in a map app. For reference, from our door in Sirkeci: Hagia Sophia 8 minutes, Topkapı 9, the Basilica Cistern 8, the Spice Bazaar 6, the Grand Bazaar and the Blue Mosque 10, Gülhane Park 5, the Galata Bridge 6 — on flat ground along the tram line, and 50 m from Sirkeci station.

What the rate includes — this is where hotels differ most

Two rates that look identical can differ by 30 % once breakfast, city transport and booking fees are counted. Check three things: is breakfast included and is it a real buffet; does the booking platform add a service fee; and is cancellation free, until when. Booking direct with a hotel usually removes the agency fee — with us there is none, breakfast is included in every room, and cancellation is free until five days before check-in.

The front desk test

Flights to Istanbul land at every hour, and the difference between a good and a bad arrival is whether a person is awake when you reach the door. Ask whether the desk is staffed 24 hours by a person, which languages they speak, and whether they arrange airport transfers directly rather than through a tout. Our desk is staffed around the clock and speaks English, Turkish, German, Russian and Arabic.

Read the reviews for the right things

Scores matter less than the pattern in the comments. Read the most recent twenty reviews and look for repeated words: cleanliness, noise, hot water, breakfast, the walk from the station. Ignore single furious reviews and single ecstatic ones. Our own current scores, which anyone can verify: Booking.com 9.3 from 1,482 reviews, Expedia 9.4 from 220, Google 4.8 from 569, and a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice at 4.7.

Size: what a small hotel does better, and worse

A large chain gives you a gym, a spa, a lift bank and anonymity. A small hotel gives you the same person at the desk twice a day, rooms cleaned by a team that knows them, and answers rather than scripts. We are small — seven room types, no pool, no spa — so if a resort is what you want, book one; if you want the old city on foot and someone who remembers your name, the small hotel is the better trade.

The honest checklist before you book anywhere

Confirm the district on a map, not in the listing. Confirm walking minutes to your two priority sights. Confirm breakfast, fees and the cancellation deadline. Confirm the desk is staffed at your arrival hour. Read twenty recent reviews for repeated complaints. Then compare the direct rate with the platform rate — they are often the same room, and the direct one usually carries fewer fees and a better cancellation window.

Where Hotel Marius fits

We are a small hotel on Orhaniye Avenue in Sirkeci, beside the station, in the Old Town. We suit first and second visits built around the monuments, arrivals by train from either airport, families who need short walks and flat ground, and travellers who value a 24-hour desk and included breakfast over a gym. We are not a resort, we have no pool and no spa, and if your trip is about nightlife you will be happier in Beyoğlu. That is the whole pitch: measured distances, real ratings and no booking fee.
