Football in Istanbul: fixtures, tickets, stadiums and how to get there

Which club plays where, how tickets actually work for a visitor, how away supporters travel on European nights, and the fastest way to each ground from the old city — plus the Istanbul fixtures still to come this season.

European nights in Istanbul this season

The European nights already confirmed for Istanbul, with dates and grounds. Each one has its own page with the route from our door. Domestic league fixtures are confirmed only a couple of weeks ahead and move for television, so check the club's own site before you book a flight around one.

Three clubs, three grounds

Galatasaray play at RAMS Park in Seyrantepe, north-west of the centre and reachable by metro. Beşiktaş play at Tüpraş Stadium in Beşiktaş, on the European shore beside Dolmabahçe Palace — the most central of the three. Fenerbahçe play at Şükrü Saracoğlu in Kadıköy, on the Asian side. Başakşehir and other clubs play further out. The Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Ikitelli is used for finals and one-off events rather than league football.

Tickets: what actually works

For Turkish league matches, tickets are sold through the clubs' own systems and normally require Passolig, a named fan card tied to an ID — visitors often cannot complete this in time, which is why many end up buying through resellers at a premium or not at all. For European matches the rules differ: away supporters buy through their own club's allocation, and neutral tickets are limited. If a specific match is the reason for your trip, sort the ticket before the flight, not after.

European nights: how away supporters travel

Visiting fans in Istanbul are usually gathered in the old city — around Sultanahmet and Sirkeci — and taken to the stadium in police-escorted coaches, then brought back the same way after the final whistle. Your club's travel information will give the meeting point and time for that match. This is the reason so many away fans book on the historic peninsula: it is where the coaches start.

Getting to each ground on your own

RAMS Park: Marmaray from Sirkeci one stop to Yenikapı, the M2 metro towards Hacıosman, change at Sanayi Mahallesi for the branch line to Seyrantepe — a footbridge leads to the stadium, about 45 minutes. Tüpraş Stadium: the T1 tram from Sirkeci to Kabataş, the end of the line, about 10–12 minutes, then a short walk. Şükrü Saracoğlu: Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and the M4 to Kadıköy, or the ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy and a walk — roughly 35–45 minutes either way.

Match day: timings and the crowd

European kick-offs in Istanbul are usually in the evening, which means the trains fill in both directions: heavily from about two hours before, and again all at once at the final whistle. If you are not in a hurry, wait twenty minutes for the crush to thin. Stadium gates open well before kick-off and security checks take time, so allow an hour more than you think. Alcohol is not sold inside stadiums in Turkey.

Eating before the game

Near Tüpraş Stadium, Beşiktaş market is full of cheap, good places and is a five-minute walk. Around RAMS Park there is little except the shopping centre at Seyrantepe, so eat before you travel. In Kadıköy the market streets by the ferry pier are among the best food in Istanbul and are on the way to Şükrü Saracoğlu. From Sirkeci, the peninsula's kebab houses and the fish sandwiches at Eminönü are the easy pre-match option.

Where to stay for a match trip

The old city, and specifically Sirkeci, for three reasons: away-fan coaches gather here, the T1 tram reaches Beşiktaş in about ten minutes, and Marmaray reaches both the metro for RAMS Park and the Asian side for Şükrü Saracoğlu. Hotel Marius is 50 m from Sirkeci station, the front desk is staffed 24 hours for late returns, and breakfast is included the morning after.
