Istanbul layover: reaching the old city from the airport

Istanbul Airport is one of the world's busiest transfer hubs, and a long connection is enough to see the old city. The M11 metro with one change to Marmaray at Halkalı brings you to Sirkeci — the station about 50 m from our door — in about 80 minutes, without a taxi. This guide covers how long you need, what to check before leaving the airport and what fits into the hours you have.

How long a layover do you need?

Allow about 80 minutes each way by rail from Istanbul Airport (IST), or about 70 from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) by the M4 metro and Marmaray from Ayrılık Çeşmesi. Plan to be back at the airport about three hours before departure, because you pass passport control and security again. That makes six hours the practical minimum for a short walk in the old city and ten or more for a relaxed visit; with an overnight connection, a room near the station replaces a night in the terminal.

Before you leave the airport

Leaving the airport means entering Türkiye, so check whether your passport needs a visa or an e-visa — the official site is evisa.gov.tr; avoid look-alike sites. Bags checked through to your final destination stay with the airline; cabin bags can go to the left-luggage office on the arrivals floor, opposite exit 13. Buy an İstanbulkart at the machines before the metro turnstiles.

Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul

If you fly Turkish Airlines with a connection of roughly 6 to 24 hours on a single booking, check the airline's free Touristanbul city tour: eligible passengers register at the Touristanbul desk at the airport, and the conditions and tour times are on the airline's website. If the times do not suit your connection, the rail route is the independent alternative.

Six to ten hours: the old city on foot

From Sirkeci station the Spice Bazaar is about 6 minutes on foot, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern about 8, the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar about 10. Choose two rather than rushing four — Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, or the Spice Bazaar and the view from the Galata Bridge — and fix your return train before you set off, with a margin.

Overnight, or door to door with the hotel

For an overnight connection, stay near the station so both journeys stay simple. Check-in at Hotel Marius is from 14:00 and check-out until 12:00; early check-in and late check-out are possible on request, and breakfast is included. If you would rather not use the metro, the hotel arranges a private transfer directly: message the front desk on WhatsApp at +90 530 333 51 61 with your flight details. Staying guests can also leave bags in the hotel's luggage room before check-in and after check-out.
