Sirkeci, Sultanahmet or Taksim: where to stay in Istanbul
Almost everyone planning a first trip to Istanbul narrows it down to these three. They are close to each other on the map and very different to stay in. Here is the honest comparison, including where our own neighbourhood loses.
Sultanahmet — inside the monuments
You wake up between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque and walk to almost every famous sight. That is the whole case for it, and it is a strong one. The cost is that the district empties after the museums close: the restaurants that stay open are built for tourists and priced for them, and locals rarely eat there. Transport is the T1 tram and little else, so anything outside the old city becomes a long trip.
Taksim and Beyoğlu — the modern city
This is where Istanbul goes out: İstiklal Avenue, bars, live music, late food. Good if evenings matter more than mornings. The cost is the commute — every visit to Hagia Sophia, Topkapı or the Grand Bazaar is a 30 to 40 minute journey each way, and İstiklal is loud until well after midnight. It is also the least convenient side for the airports.
Sirkeci — between the two
Sirkeci sits at the tip of the old city, ten to fifteen minutes on foot from Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, one tram stop from the Grand Bazaar. What it has that Sultanahmet does not is the transport: the Marmaray runs under the Bosphorus to the Asian side, the T1 tram crosses the peninsula, and the Eminönü ferry piers are a few minutes away — three networks from one point. That is also why the airports are easier from here: Sabiha Gökçen is one change and about 50 minutes.
Where Sirkeci loses
It is not a nightlife district. If you want to walk out of the hotel at midnight into bars and music, Beyoğlu is the honest answer, not Sirkeci. It also has no rooftop Bosphorus panorama the way parts of Sultanahmet do — this is a working quarter of the old city, not a viewpoint. Evenings here are quiet, which is the point for some travellers and a drawback for others.
A simple way to choose
Coming for the monuments and the museums, with early starts and a day trip or two: Sirkeci. Staying three days, never leaving the old city, and wanting the shortest possible walk to Hagia Sophia: Sultanahmet. Coming for the food, the bars and the modern city, with the historic sights as a single day: Taksim or Beyoğlu.
